Waste management, either solid or liquid needs an integrated approach starting from place of generation to the final disposal of all residual contents of waste for most effective, economic and safe handling. Management of solid waste covers three groups of solid waste –Municipal solid waste, Bio-medical waste and Industrial & hazardous waste. All the three groups of wastes need to be managed separately for storage, collection, transfer, transportation, processing and final disposal.

Integrated Municipal solid waste management encompasses the functions and activities of sweeping of public roads and places; identifying sources of generation of solid waste; analysis of physical, chemical and biological properties to establish quality of solid waste; ascertaining quantity of solid waste generated in various categories for effective handling; source reduction and storage at source in desired categories; primary collection of waste separately in four categories; secondary collection, transfer and transportation of solid waste to processing & disposal sites; decentralized processing & recycling for resource recovery; final disposal of residue at land fill; awareness creation and community involvement; enforcement of statutory directives ; resource management and monitoring operations.
